“Here. Brought you this.” Isaac tapped Declan’s shoulder with one hand, and offered him a damp facecloth with the other. He’d lingered at his bathroom sink long enough for the water to heat up for Declan, but had taken care of his personal business with a shock of cold. Under the harsher white light above the mirror, he’d looked almost strange to himself. Nearly as shocky as Declan, and for the first time he admitted to himself that maybe the events of the day had had their effect on him too.

Physician, heal thyself.

Declan didn’t seem to want to move even so far as taking the damp cloth from Isaac, but Isaac had been prepared for that. He held it over Declan’s head and squeezed the terry in his hand. One drop of water fell fat and heavy to splash on Declan’s nose. “That means ‘take it’,” he said as Declan spluttered.

Declan shot him a dour look, but tweaked the cloth out of Isaac’s hand and ran it over his face. “Thanks,” he muttered.

“Not exactly what I had in mind, but it’s a start.”

“Unless you feel like a rinse cycle and a tumble dry, it’s as good as it’ll get,” Declan said, wiping his hands.

Isaac raised one shoulder. “Is there a reason I shouldn’t offer that? Because I was going to. There’s two people in this room, and the hardass isn’t me.”

“You would put it that way,” Declan muttered. He balled up the cloth and tossed it back to Isaac.

“You didn’t finish,” Isaac remarked mildly. He’d expected as much, and had come mentally prepared. Declan would always be a challenge. Luckily for both of them, a man who never knew when to take no for an answer thrived on challenges. He dropped to a crouch, then to a kneel behind Declan, putting one arm around his chest and one around his waist, and tucked his chin over Declan’s shoulder. “As I recall, we made a deal. It’s your turn to pay up.”

Declan huffed a small laugh and said nothing.

Isaac didn’t react. He could be patient enough to let Declan find the words in his own time. He closed his eyes and listened to the man’s breathing, and the small, subtle ways it changed as he struggled with himself. Pride went toe to toe with need, and shame with stubbornness and a sense of honor. All the things that made Declan a damned good doctor, and a hot mess of emotions.

He waited. Not for long.

“Answer me one thing,” Declan said. “Why do you care? I can’t get my head around it. Why even like me?”

Isaac took the question seriously. Idly, he stroked the skin-warm cloth of Declan’s jersey, smoothing it down, then rumpling it back up again over Declan’s stomach. “Because you’re worth it,” he said. “Hard work, but with a decent reward. Like a truffle wrapped in barbed wire.”

“Jesus.” Declan sighed. “Fine. But only if you admit you’re a truffle balanced on the end of a blunt instrument.”

Isaac snorted.
